Mumbai Police step up security at Kapil Sharma’s home after Canada cafe attack

Security at the Oshiwara residence of television personality Kapil Sharma has been increased following a shooting incident at his newly opened cafe in Surrey, Canada. Mumbai Police were seen at Sharma’s home in the DLH Enclave building, Andheri West, on Friday, a day after the attack at Kap’s Cafe, which he co-owns with his wife, Ginni Chatrath.

According to officials, police personnel have been deployed outside the building for additional security, and checks are being conducted on those entering and leaving the premises. The police also spoke with the private security staff of the residential society and inspected the surrounding area. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding specific threats to Sharma in Mumbai, nor has his statement been recorded by authorities.

The incident in Canada occurred in the early hours of Thursday, when at least nine to twelve shots were fired at the glass wall of Kap’s Cafe in Surrey’s 8400-block of 120th Street. The attack caused property damage but no injuries. Harjit Singh, an operative of the banned group Babbar Khalsa, claimed responsibility for the shooting, stating it was in retaliation for remarks about Nihang Sikhs’ attire made during a television show hosted by Sharma.

The shooting has raised concerns about the safety of Indian celebrities with business interests abroad, especially in light of a recent rise in similar attacks in Canada. Police and other agencies in India remain on alert following the incident.

Sharma has not yet made a public statement about the attack, and it remains unclear whether he will continue filming for his Netflix show ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ in Filmcity. Kap’s Cafe, which opened on July 4, had quickly become popular for its decor and menu, and the team behind the cafe has expressed shock and heartbreak over the violence, but also resilience and gratitude for community support.
